Ancient Egypt
Overview of the Egyptian Gods and Goddesses:
Amon Re' ~ The combined deity of Amon, the primordial creation-deity, and Re', the sun god. The two dominating gods were at first worshiped in different parts of Egypt, but they were later combined into one by priests in attempt to unite the New Kingdom. When he is on earth, the god is in the form of Amon. When he is in heavens, he is Re'.
Bastet ~ The patroness of music and dance, whose is associated with cats. She is usually depicted as a woman with a cat's head.
Geb ~ The ancient earth god. He was the brother- husband of Nut, and having been separated from her by the mandate of Re', he wept until his tears formed the sea and oceans of the world.
Hapi ~ The personafication of the Nile.
Hathor ~ An important sky goddess, she was the daughter of Re' and the wife of Horus. She sometimes assumed the role of the celestial cow.
Horus ~ The falcon god, a sky deity and the first state god of Egypt.
Isis ~ The protector goddess of the living and dead, she was the wife of Osiris.
Khnum ~ The creator god.
Khons ~ The moon god.
Ma'at ~ The goddess of truth, who judged the deceased in Osiris' abode. She is pictured as a woman with a feather on her head.
Montu ~ The war god who protected the kings in battle.
Mut ~ A war goddess; the wife of Amon.
Neith ~ The patroness of war and hunting.
Nekhebet ~ The vulture goddess, patroness of Upper Egypt.
Nun ~ The watery chaos before creation.
Osiris ~ The god of the dead, lord of the Tuat, or the underworld.
Ptah ~ The creator god of Memphis, and the patron of craftsmen. He is the huband of Sekhmet, and her counterpart.
Sekhmet ~ The daughter of Re', a lion headed goddess. She fought the nemies of Re', and once nearly destroyed all mankind. She represents the powers of the sun's rays.
Sobek ~ The crocodile god.
Taweret ~ The hippopotamus goddess of Egypt. She was the protector of women in childbirth.
Thoth ~ The god of wisdom. Sometimes he was depicted as a baboon.
Wadjet ~ The cobra goddess, who was the patroness of Lower Egypt, protecting it from enemies.
Wepwawet ~ The opener of the Ways. Recommended reads:
